Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Question:
I’ve heard that augmentation is common in Hispanic rhinoplasty procedures. Is this true and, if so, what do you use to augment the nose?
Answer:
The low dorsum is addressed by an augmentation graft, carefully carved to the proper dimensions and placed on the nasal bridge. This graft not only raises the bridge but also creates an additional appearance of narrowness.
I use only the patient’s own cartilage. While some surgeons use artificial implants (Gortex, Silastic, and others), the risk of infection and skin damage is a significant concern when using artificial implants. The effects of skin damage are often irreversible and can be debilitating. For this reason, I prefer to reduce this risk by avoiding the use of these artificial implants.
