| The Ideal Nose
Question: When it comes to rhinonplasty, what is different for men vs. women?
Answer:
There are more similarities than differences. With both men and women, Dr. Becker finds out what you don't like about your nose, does a careful examination, and undertakes a nasal and facial analysis. He works with the patient, usually with the assistance of computer imaging, to agree on a goal of surgery that will be harmonious with your other facial features.
In general, there are some differences in what is a harmonious, natural-looking nose for men compared to women. For men, it is generally preferable to have a stronger, slightly longer nose compared to women.
There are certain specific mathematical analysis angles that relate to this. The normal nasolabial angle ranges from 90 to 120 degrees, within this range a larger angle is more favorable in women while a smaller angle is more favorable in men.
The normal nasofrontal angle is 115 to 130 degrees. Within this range, a larger angle is more favorable in women and a smaller angle is more favorable in men.
What is the SAME for both male and female patients is a desire to improve their appearance, and specifically to improve their nasal appearance. Dr. Becker works with you, using his knowledge and experience with rhinoplasty and with the aesthetic ideals for the nose in both men and women, to find the surgical goal that will best fit your face.
he "ideal" nose is a nose that is in harmony with the other favorable features of your face. The "ideal" shape for a male or female nose is an aesthetic concept that has its roots in our perception of beauty. This cannot be completely boiled down to lines and numbers -- there is always an indescribable "artistic" element. However, by studying beauty, and faces that are universally felt to be beautiful, artists and plastic surgeons can arrive at some guidelines or proportions that represent the "aesthetic ideal." Leonardo da Vinci was among the first to make such studies of beauty and aesthetic proportions. He and other artists have been joined in this pursuit by facial plastic surgeons such as Dr. Becker, whose job entails understanding beauty and then making changes that enhance the appearance of their patients.
