Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Question:
How do you improve a wide, flat nasal appearance in an African American nose?

Answer:
Improvement of the wide, flat nasal appearance is a common concern for African-American patients.

Treatment of the wide, flat upper portion often involves osteotomies (cutting the nasal bone with a “micro-osteotome” and shifting them closer to the middle – narrowing the nose. Also, adding height also makes the nose appear less wide. This is achieved with an implant (also known as a graft) on the nasal bridge. I prefer to use the patient’s own cartilage and have been successful with this approach.
