Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Question:
What is ethnic rhinoplasty?
Answer:
The term ethnic rhinoplasty refers to rhinoplasty performed on Asian, African-American, or Hispanic patients.
The medical literature makes generalizations about these ethnic groups, and about the surgical methods that should be used. While these generalizations can be a useful way of categorizing and communicating, ultimately what is most important is the patient's specific anatomy - your specific anatomy. If the specific patient in my office fits the "general rule," then that is fine. But, more than likely (as we are all unique) the patient's nose will deviate from the general rule in some way.
Performing a rhinoplasty is not like baking a cake. When you bake a cake, you try to do it the same way each time. In rhinoplasty, each nose is different, and it is important to understand the uniqueness of each nose to tailor the operation to fit the nose.
