Introduction

The Online Patient Guide to Rhinoplasty is designed to provide general information for anyone interested in rhinoplasty. This book is based upon my practice of the art and science of rhinoplasty. It includes specific information for my patients, including my instructions to patients, and a description of the typical rhinoplasty experience in my hands. This guide will be most useful to my patients, but I hope that others will find it very useful too.

The best patient is a well-informed patient. In an effort to provide detailed information to individuals trying to learn about rhinoplasty, I created two websites, TheRhinoplastyCenter.com and RevisionRhinoplasty.com, in the year 2000. These websites were incredibly successful from the first day. Over 300,000 unique visitors come to these websites every year, where they learn the basics of rhinoplasty, get answers to the "frequently asked questions," and more.

Because of these websites' success, I have written this book to provide an additional educational tutorial for you - I hope that you find it useful.

Here is what you will find inside this book:

We begin with an Overview of Rhinoplasty. Then, we discuss the process of Choosing a Rhinoplasty Surgeon. Each patient has a unique series of events that lead them to their surgeon. There is no foolproof method, but I will try to give you some helpful information.

An important part of the process is Your Consultation with your prospective surgeon. I'll give you my thoughts on what you should expect. Once you have made a decision for surgery and have chosen your surgeon, there are some things that you can do to prepare. I will tell you the things we do for my patients in the chapter, Preparing for Your Rhinoplasty Surgery.

I'll tell you what to expect on the day ofYour Rhinoplasty Procedure, and what to expect After Your Rhinoplasty Procedure.

All surgeons have complications. The nationally reported rate of revision surgery is 8-15%. In addition to primary rhinoplasty, I do perform revision rhinoplasty on patients who have come from across the country and around the world, seeking improvement of an unhappy outcome from a prior surgery. I conclude with a chapter on Complications and Revision Rhinoplasty.

The Appendix links to other parts of my websites where important additional detailed information for the reader interested in a greater depth of knowledge. Knowledge is Power is based on the idea that the best patient is a well-educated patient, and introduces you to the basics of the technical aspects of rhinoplasty - the anatomy of the nose, the concept of the "ideal nose," and a basic overview of the techniques used in rhinoplasty. Some readers like to skip ahead and read this first.

I have also included in the Appendix a link to the transcript of an important lecture, "Form and Function in Rhinoplasty," because a nose should look good, and it should work, too! It also contains copies of the Instruction Sheets given to my patients for before and after surgery. It contains detailed information about Certifying Boards. Finally, I provide some information About the Author.
