What are Five Tips for a Speedy Recovery Following a Rhinoplasty?
Before considering rhinoplasty, it’s important to know what to expect after the surgery. Your doctor goes over everything with you, but make sure you are okay following the standard instructions. Failure to follow these instructions may lead to a slower recovery period or infection.
Avoid Strenuous Activity Involving the Face
For the first week, brush teeth carefully, especially on the upper lip and jaw. You should also avoid any activities that require high levels of exertion, including fitness routines and sexual intercourse. Do not chew hard or tough foods. Also, avoid excessive smiling or laughing for the first week. Do not engage in long conversations, either in person or on the phone, for upwards of two weeks.
Choose Shirts That Do Not Touch the Nose
For the first week, avoid wearing any clothing that must be pulled over the head. Stick to zip up sweatshirts and sweaters or shirts that button up the front. Other things that shouldn’t touch or rest on the nose are glasses and sunglasses. Wait two or three days before using contact lenses.
Don’t Take Medications Not Prescribed by Your Doctor
Do not use aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications that you have at home. Your doctor will give you any medications that you need while you recover.
Keep Nasal Dressings and Cast Dry
Make sure you keep the nasal dressings dry when washing your face. You will need to change the dressings regularly while your nose drains.
If you have a nasal cast, you should not touch it. Keep it dry and wait until your next appointment with the doctor. Your doctor should be the only person to remove that cast. Do not take showers until the nasal cast and dressings are removed.
Rest with Your Head Elevated
To reduce swelling, it’s necessary to rest with your head elevated. You must sleep on your back to avoid putting any pressure on your nose, too. The easiest way to sleep in an elevated position is by sleeping in a recliner or propping up your neck and shoulders with one or two extra pillows.
