What courses do you teach about rhinoplasty surgery?
We just completed the University of Pennsylvania Rhinoplasty Course 2013. I was co-director of this course, which had an all-star international roster of Rhinoplasty Experts. I was happy to discuss my treatment of the Bulbous Nasal Tip, and also my Personal Philosophy on Open Rhinoplasty. There was a great and lively exchange of ideas.
It was quite gratifying to hear from the guest professor from a famous University Hospital here in the United States. In his lecture, he mentioned that my paper in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery about the Sharpness of Osteotomes (the instrument used to take down the nasal bump), that as a result of this paper he was able to persuade the Operating Rooms at their hospital to change their protocol. They now discard these instruments after five uses instead of using them endlessly. He showed this photo from our paper, an electron microscope image of a new osteotome and one that had been used 9 times. This is why they should be disposable! It was really nice to see that our research made a real difference in the way this surgery is performed.
