Piezo Rhinoplasty: The Cutting-Edge Technique in Nose Reshaping

Becker Rhinoplasty Center introduces Piezo rhinoplasty, a precise, minimally invasive nasal reshaping technique for natural nasal reshaping.

Piezo rhinoplasty offers precise nose reshaping using advanced ultrasound technology for optimal results.

An advanced ultrasonic technology called piezo rhinoplasty is revolutionizing nasal reconstruction surgeries. This methodology presents a novel way to reshape nasal bones by using the exact capabilities of high-frequency ultrasonic pulses supplied using a piezotome. It provides detailed modifications while preserving surrounding tissues.

A sophisticated and least invasive way to achieve face equilibrium, piezo rhinoplasty is appropriate for a variety of nasal adjustments, such as wide or uneven noses and subsequent procedures.

How Piezo Technology Works in Nose Reshaping

In piezo rhinoplasty, a piezotome sends high-speed sound waves directly at the nasal bones. This lets the surgeon shape and remove abnormalities while seeing them clearly and without hurting the nearby blood vessels or soft tissue.

This is a major improvement over conventional rhinoplasty surgery, when the strong approach of utilizing a crude hammer and chisel technique sometimes resulted in issues from chisels, such as bone abnormalities and too great swelling and bruising.

Differences Between Piezo Rhinoplasty and Traditional Methods

Piezo rhinoplasty uses an ultrasonic device to transmit ultrasonic energy, and offers a more accurate method for reshaping the nose compared to traditional rhinoplasty techniques.

Traditional rhinoplasty surgery, whether it’s a closed rhinoplasty or a regular nose job, often involves the use of hammers and chisels to adjust the nasal bone structure. This forceful method can lead to potential complications such as bone splintering, inadvertent fractures, and collateral damage to the adjacent tissue.

The recovery period after conventional rhinoplasty techniques can be longer due to the degree of bruising and swelling caused by the trauma to the soft tissue.

Advantages of Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

An advanced approach with many advantages above conventional rhinoplasty operations is ultrasonic rhinoplasty. Unlike only filing and shattering the nasal bones, ultrasonic waves enable actual shaping and sculpting of them. Less trauma to surrounding tissue follows from this, which speeds up recovery and simplifies repair.

Ideal Candidates for Piezo Rhinoplasty

Those who need a precise and accurate approach for nasal bone structure reshining are the perfect candidates for Piezo rhinoplasty. Those with a large or asymmetrical nose, a noticeable nasal hump, or a crooked nose pyramid will find especially good fit for this complex nose job operation.

The ultrasonic rhinoplasty technique can effectively address these issues, providing a more appealing nose shape and a balanced appearance among facial features. However, it’s important to note that Piezo rhinoplasty is not suitable for all types of nose reshaping.

For instance, it is not the ideal form of rhinoplasty for those who require adjustments to the cartilage framework, such as the lateral cartilage. The piezotome device used in this procedure cannot cut or reshape dense cartilage, as the high density of bone is required for effective energy transmission. Therefore, if a patient requires only tip surgery or cartilage adjustments, a regular nose job or a different type of rhinoplasty may be more appropriate.

Do I need Pre-operative Preparations for Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

Before undergoing an ultrasonic rhinoplasty procedure, it’s crucial to prepare adequately to ensure a successful surgery and a comfortable recovery.

Patients are advised to cease taking medications or supplements that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and vitamin E. If you’re a smoker, it’s recommended to quit at least two weeks before and after the surgery, as smoking can delay wound healing and increase the risk of complications, including excessive scarring and blood vessel injury. In addition, patients are instructed to fast (no food or drink) for at least 8 hours before the surgery.

This is a standard precaution to prevent aspiration during anesthesia. It’s also advisable to avoid strenuous activities and contact sports for a few weeks before the surgery to minimize the risk of accidental trauma to the nasal structure.

Piezo Rhinoplasty Procedure

The Piezo rhinoplasty procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure patient comfort throughout the surgery. The surgeon then makes incisions inside the nostrils or across the columella (the tissue that separates the nostrils) depending, on the specific needs of the patient.

The surgeon then uses a piezotome device, which emits ultrasonic waves, to sculpt and reshape the nasal bones. This device allows the surgeon to make precise adjustments to the bone without causing damage to the surrounding soft tissue.

Once the desired shape is achieved, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and applies a nasal splint to support the new shape of the nose during the initial healing period. The procedure typically takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to complete.

How is the Recovery after Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

One of the significant advantages of Piezo rhinoplasty over traditional methods is the faster and more comfortable recovery period. Most patients experience little to no pain following the surgery. Bruising is significantly reduced, and in some cases, patients find there is hardly any bruising at all.

A nasal splint is applied after the surgery to keep the nasal bones in position during the initial healing period. This splint is usually removed approximately one week later. At the time of splint removal, most patients will discover minimal or no bruising.

Potential Risks of Piezo Rhinoplasty

While Piezo rhinoplasty is a safe and effective procedure, as with any surgical procedure, it carries potential risks. These risks are the same as those associated with any general rhinoplasty and may include infection, bleeding, scarring, and adverse reactions to anesthesia.

Other potential complications specific to rhinoplasty include difficulty breathing through the nose, numbness, nose asymmetry, and dissatisfaction with the cosmetic outcome. However, the risk of these complications is significantly reduced when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon.
